<p>In a rapidly changing and aging world more and more people suffer from age-related decline of intelligence or dementia. </p>
<p>Scientists are looking for more new methods to combat it, because this illness dramatically reduces the quality of life of the patient and often leads to the necessity of reconsidering the ways of living of all family members.  </p>
<p>Flavonoids and antioxidants that are found in cocoa beans may be good sources of medicine in this situation.  </p>
<p>Ian MacDonald, the scientist from Nottingham, United Kingdom, describes an experiment in which young women were drinking a cup of cocoa before performing complex tasks and performed them under control of a magnetic resonance imaging procedure.  </p>
<p>The device showed a significant acceleration of cerebral blood flow in the group.  </p>
<p>The next step was to study the impact of cocoa on the brains of people who have initially reduced cerebral blood flow.  </p>
<p>According to the researchers, the benefits that cocoa brings were discovered during the investigation of health of the tribes of South America who drink this beverage in very large quantities.  </p>
<p>However, the problem lies in the fact that cocoa powder which is delivered to the shops is poor with flavonoids. They are artificially extracted from raw materials, as flavonoids give this drink a bitter taste.  </p>
<p>The researchers also fear that patients will &#8220;look&#8221; the same substance in chocolate that will lead to problems with obesity. Chocolate is food for pleasure and it will never improve health as opposed to cocoa in anticipation of bright future, scientists say. </p>

<p>Which drinks are the best hydrators, and which the worst? Here are the three most hydrating and the four least hydrating drinks.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Drinks That Are Strong Hydrators</span></strong></p>
<p><strong>Water</strong><br />
Water is the preeminent beverage for correctly hydrating the body.</p>
<p><strong>Herbal Teas (Infusions)</strong><br />
The leaves from plants such as mint, verbena, linden, balm, and so on give a pleasant aroma and flavor to the water in which they are steeped, which makes infusions a satisfying alternative to people who don&#8217;t enjoy drinking plain water.</p>
<p>The medicinal properties of the plants do not have a negative effect on the body&#8217;s assimilation of the water.</p>
<p>Note: The benefit does not extend to sweetened infusions, or if the tea is made with plants that have diuretic properties, such as dandelion.</p>
<p><strong>Fruit and Vegetable Juices</strong><br />
The water in fruits and vegetables&#8211;their juice&#8211;is one of the liquids nature has provided for hydrating our bodies. Juice is water bound to a substance. To maintain our harmonic balance with nature and avoid taking in too high a concentration of nutrients and sugars, we should consider juice a secondary resource to be used in moderation.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Drinks that Are Weak Hydrators</span></strong></p>
<p><strong>Coffee, Tea, and Cocoa</strong><br />
Drinks that have a base of coffee, black tea, or cocoa are quite high in purins, toxins that must be eliminated from the body by urine or sweat in the form of uric acid. Purines need to be diluted in large quantities of liquid to be evacuated without irritation. A good portion of the water consumed with these drinks is used to eliminate the toxins.</p>
<p><strong>Milk</strong><br />
Milk is a food, not a drink, and its digestion by adults is frequently incomplete.</p>
<p>Whey, on the other hand, is very easily digested, but its diuretic properties are an impediment to its consumption as a daily beverage.</p>
<p><strong>Soft Drinks</strong><br />
Soft drinks often have a high caffeine base, a diuretic, which makes a body lose water before it has time to make its way into the intracellular environment. The other problem comes from the high sugar content of most sodas. The body has a hard time properly metabolizing refined sugar. To correct the reaction to this, the body has to surrender water from the extracellular fluid. Because that makes a person thirsty, a vicious circle is created, as the thirst is being maintained by the very beverage that is drink with the intention of getting rid of it.</p>
<p><strong>Alcoholic Beverages</strong><br />
Alcohol itself has dehydrating properties, removing water from the tissues it contacts and drying them out and increasing the need for water.</p>

<p>This green practice makes this the world’s first coffee that offsets the negative effects  of carbon. The roasting and shipping of one pound of coffee adds about 4 pounds of the equivalent carbon dioxide (CO2e) in the atmosphere.</p>
<p>However, the planting of trees which grow fast in the Ecuadorian cloud forest removes 54 pounds of CO2e. According to Tiny Footprint Coffee, that for every pound of coffee sold, there is 50 pounds of negative carbon goodness.</p>
<p>However, the trees that are planted have to suck up CO2 for 20 years in order to reach that figure of 54 pounds. Also there is much more to consider about the coffee’s carbon footprint than simply the roasting and shipping.</p>
<p>For instance, in your home the process of brewing the beverage and the grinding of coffee beans creates somewhere between 0.04 and 0.7 pounds of CO2e, depending on what you add to the coffee and how you heat your water. Because each pound of coffee is good for approximately fifty cups of coffee there is somewhere between 2.3 and 35 additional pounds of emission of CO2e for each pound of coffee that you purchase.</p>
<p>Although Tiny Footprint Coffee is 90% fair trade certified and all organic, the other 10% of coffees that are fair trade and are non certified that come from family farms that are small and aren’t eligible for certification of fair trade since they aren’t a part of a large growing cooperative.</p>
<p>However, they do grow sustainable, premium, and beautiful coffees that people pay above fair trade price to get. Also those numbers don&#8217;t include the widely varying farming practices that can affect the carbon footprint of growing a cup of coffee. People always buy organic coffees that are sustainably grown but aren’t limited to only reach certified fair trade coffees.</p>
<p>As far as the claims of the carbon negative, the CO2e calculations made by Tiny Footprint should be taken with a grain of salt. In addition, they are hard to compare with other coffee companies that are planting trees.</p>

It comes from the berries of the <em>coffea</em> bush, which have been processed, dried, roasted, ground, and brewed. In its powder form, it may be prepared and presented in many ways. Its strong rich smell is hard enough to resist, and whether it is served hot or cold, it always arouses a stimulating effect on the drinker, due mainly to its caffeine content. Some of the more popular coffee preparations are the following:</p>
<p><strong>Café  latte</strong> is an Italian preparation for coffee and milk; it is prepared on a one to one ratio and uses strong bold coffee with scalded milk. Café mocha is hot coffee and hot cocoa with whipped cream and a little grated chocolate. Capuccino, on the other hand, is one-third espresso, one-third hot milk, and one-third steamed milk foam. Traditionally served on a porcelain cup, the heat retention qualities of the cup as well as the foam help to keep the coffee stay hotter longer.</p>
<p>The Cortado Condensada is <strong>espresso</strong> (concentrated coffee) with a small amount of warm condensed milk, usually served in a special glass with a metal ring base and a metal ring handle and drunk in the afternoon, while the Leche y Leche is espresso with condensed milk and cream topping. Espresso con Panna is espresso topped with whipped cream. Café Bombon is espresso with sweetened condensed milk that has been allowed to sink to the bottom thereby creating two bands of contrasting colors. The Macchiato is espresso with a dash of foamed milk and a sprinkling of cocoa on top.</p>
<p><strong>Café  Americano</strong> refers to the simple preparation of hot water added to espresso. Long Black, on the other hand, is espresso added to hot water. Red Eye is drip coffee with one shot of espresso while Black Eye is drip coffee with two shots of espresso. Guillermo, on the other hand, is one or two shots of espresso with slices of lime.</p>
<p><strong>Carajillo</strong> is espresso with a shot of brandy while liqueur coffee is a coffee brew with a shot of liqueur served in demi-tasse cups. Café Flambe is sugar that has been set on fire with cognac and poured into strong coffee. Café Royal is strong coffee that has been sweetened to taste and served with a measure of brandy.</p>
<p><strong>Frapuccino</strong> is a blend of ice beverage and a bottled coffee beverage while frappe is foam-covered iced coffee drink. Con Hielo is espresso with sugar and ice cubes while Iced Coffee is chilled espresso with milk and ice cream.</p>
<p>Flat White refers to the preparation of two-thirds creamy steamed milk poured over one-third espresso with little or no foam at all. <strong>Instant Coffee</strong> is brewed coffee that has been dried out or dehydrated into powder form. <strong>Viennese coffee</strong> is strong hot coffee with whipped double cream that is just beginning to thicken while <strong>Café Brulot</strong> is strong black coffee that has been poured with heated sugar, orange rind, lemon bits, cinnamon sticks, and cloves, and served in demi-tasse cups.</p>
<p>When topping coffee with whipped cream, be careful to slide the cream gently on so that the cream stays on top. Canapés and other small savouries like bread and cake may be served together with the coffee so that it may be thoroughly enjoyed.</p>

<p>Here’s how to make the most of chocolate for your chocolate drink, whether you take it hot or cold. For chocolate-flavored liquids, take the ratio of 1 to 1, that is, 4 ounces of chocolate for every 4 cups of liquid. Chop the chocolate into small cubes and allow it to melt slowly over low heat. To melt chocolate, heat it in a bowl suspended over but not in a pan of hot but not boiling water. Melt it slowly without stirring and it should just be lukewarm.</p>
<p>Chocolate will lose its glossy shine and delicious aroma if it is overheated. When done properly, the result will be a rich velvety smooth indulgence every chocolate lover will enjoy. Nonetheless if you prefer it, this mixture may be substituted with ¾ cup cocoa powder and ¼ cup sugar for every 4 ounces of chocolate. <p><strong>Mate drinking</strong><br />
As with other brewed herbs, yerba mate leaves are dried, chopped, and ground into a powdery mixture. Unlike other brews, however, mate is traditionally sipped from a dried and carefully carved, hollow calabash, through a special metal straw (traditionally silver) called a bombilla. Bombilla usually means &#8220;light bulb&#8221; in Spanish, but locally it is &#8220;little pump&#8221; or &#8220;straw&#8221;.</p>

- 1 quart boiled water<br />
- 4 tea bags (regular)<br />
- 1 3/4 cups fresh mint leaves<br />
- 1/4 cup of sugar<br />
- 1/4 cup of lime juice (preferably, freshly squeezed)</p>
<p>Once the water is boiled, mix the tea bags, mint leaves and sugar in it. Let it steep for 15 minutes and strain out the tea bags and mint leaves. Chill and then mix in the lime juice.<br />

<p><strong>Fluoride</strong><br />
The authors concluded that tea was an effective vehicle for delivering fluoride to the oral cavity where it may then become associated with the oral tissues potentially helping to prevent dental decay.  Even for adults, whose teeth are fully formed, tea’s fluoride is a great way to protect your teeth. The fluoride found in tea has been shown to inhibit the growth of glucosyltransferase. This substance helps the plaque that naturally forms to adhere to our teeth.</p>
<p><strong> Tannins</strong><br />
Other components of tea may also contribute to the inhibition of caries. It has been reported that the tannins in tea can inhibit salivary amylase thereby reducing the cariogenic potential of starch-containing foods.</p>
<p><strong> Acid erosion</strong><br />
In addition to its beneficial effect on plaque, tannin, along with other components of tea such as catechin, caffeine and tocopherol have been shown to be effective in increasing the acid resistance of tooth enamel.</p>
<p><strong> Flavonoids</strong><br />
Both green and black tea and their specific flavonoids, mainly catechins, have exhibited inhibitory effects on the growth of cariogenic bacteria by preventing the adherence and growth of plaque bacteria at the tooth surface.</p>
<p>So, while black tea is definitely good for you, and is protective to your teeth, for the maximum overall health benefits, get your daily dose of green tea. <p>One cup of tea contains approximately 0.25 milligrams of fluoride. Fluoride is well known about its positive effect on teeth. One’s daily fluoride need is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.5 milligrams. Thus tea consumption also contributes to meet our fluoride need.</p>
<p>People, who have abandoned their morning cup of coffee for a healthier cup of herbal tea might want to think again, say British researchers. They found that many herbal teas seriously damage teeth by eroding protective enamel.</p>
<p>Drinking herbal teas regularly can erode tooth enamel, according to a new study conducted in the United Kingdom. Paul Brunton and A. Hussain at the University Dental Hospital of Manchester conducted their study with three groups of 21 extracted teeth. </p>
<p>Each set of teeth was dropped into either regular black tea (Typhoo), herbal tea (Twinings&#8217; Blackcurrant, Ginseng and Vanilla tea), or water. The teeth soaked for 14 days, which the investigators determined to be equal to drinking three cups a day for 18 years.</p>
<p>Both the black tea and the herbal tea caused tooth surface loss; however, Brunton and Hussain found that the erosive effect of herbal tea was five times more severe. The findings, published in the November 2001 issue of the Journal of Dentistry, were attributed to the high acid content of the herbal tea.</p>
<p>Another tea study of tea effects found that polyphenols–chemicals found in tea–can help prevent bad breath. Laboratory experiments revealed that polyphenols can retard the bacterial growth that causes bad breath.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>ScienceDaily (Jun. 17, 2008) — A new study has good news for coffee drinkers: Regular coffee drinking (up to 6 cups per day) is not associated with increased deaths in either men or women. </p>
<p>In fact, both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption is associated with a somewhat smaller rate of death from heart disease.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Coffee consumption has been linked to various beneficial and detrimental health effects, but data on its relation with death were lacking,&#8221; says Esther Lopez-Garcia, PhD, the study&#8217;s lead author. &#8220;Coffee consumption was not associated with a higher risk of mortality in middle-aged men and women. The possibility of a modest benefit of coffee consumption on heart disease, cancer, and other causes of death needs to be further investigated.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Women consuming two to three cups of caffeinated coffee per day had a 25 percent <strong>lower risk of death from heart disease</strong> during the follow-up period (which lasted from 1980 to 2004 and involved 84,214 women) as compared with non-consumers, and an 18 percent lower risk of death caused by something other than cancer or heart disease as compared with non-consumers during follow-up. </p>
<p>For men, this level of consumption was associated with neither a higher nor a lower risk of death during the follow-up period (which lasted from 1986 to 2004 and involved 41,736 men).</p>
<p>The researchers analyzed data of 84,214 women who had participated in the Nurses&#8217; Health Study and 41,736 men who had participated in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. To be in the current study, participants had to have been free of cancer and heart disease at the start of those larger studies.</p>
<p>The study participants completed questionnaires every two to four years that included questions about how frequently they drank coffee, other diet habits, smoking, and health conditions. The researchers then compared the frequency of death from any cause, death due to heart disease, and death due to cancer among people with different coffee-drinking habits.</p>
<p>Among women, 2,368 deaths were due to heart disease, 5,011 were due to cancer, and 3,716 were due to another cause. Among men, 2,049 deaths were due to heart disease, 2,491 were due to cancer, and 2,348 were due to another cause.</p>
<p>While accounting for other risk factors, such as body size, smoking, diet, and specific diseases, the researchers found that people who drank more coffee were less likely to die during the follow-up period. This was mainly because of lower risk for heart disease deaths among coffee drinkers.</p>
<p>The researchers found no association between coffee drinking and cancer deaths. These relationships did not seem to be related to caffeine because people who drank decaffeinated coffee also had lower death rates than people who did not drink coffee.</p>
<p>The editors of Annals of Internal Medicine caution that the design of the study does not make it certain that coffee decreases the chances of dying sooner than expected. Something else about coffee drinkers might be protecting them. And some measurement error in the assessment of coffee consumption is inevitable because estimated consumption came from self-reports.</p>
