According to recent reports issued by the FDA, there are as many as 5 deaths and 40 illnesses linked to consumption of the drink called Monster Energy. Moreover, there are two permanent disabilities and 13 illnesses linked directly with the consumption of the Rockstar Energy Drink.

The 5-Hour energy drinks are also quite dangerous, and the FDA reported that there are 92 illnesses and 13 deaths linked to consumption of this particular drink.
The AERs or the Adverse Event Reports can be filed by anyone- family members, personal doctors or even by the patient himself. These reports actually say that the consumption of the given energy drink might have caused illnesses and even the death of the patient. However, until detailed investigation shows these illnesses and deaths have been really produced by the energy drink, the FDA cannot remove the products from the market.
Officer Shelly Burgess, an FDA representative says that until they find a direct link between the regular consumption of these energy drinks and the general health harm produced by them, they cannot eliminate these products from the market.
The Adverse Event Reports mostly point out that consumers of 5-Hour energy drink, Monster or Rockstar have suffered the following health problems:
-5-Hour energy drinks- deaths caused by heart attack due to consumptions of the energy drink, one miscarriage, deafness and internal bleeding
-the Monster Energy Drink- loss of consciousness, heart attack, hospitalization of the patient because of arrhythmia, and vomiting
-Rockstar energy drink- irregular heartbeats, psychotic disorder, loss of consciousness or stroke

According to Peter Piper, professor from Sheffield University, carbonated drinks contain a substance which harmful effects are still being underestimated.

After spending a huge amount of time on experiments in his laboratory, Professor of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, P. Piper came to the conclusion that sodium benzoate (E211), a widespread preservative in food industry being accepted by relevant authorities in different countries, can be very dangerous for your health.
Sodium benzoate has already been the subject of concern, but at that time it dealt with its carcinogenic effect.
The fact is that in conjunction with vitamin C in soft drinks, sodium benzoate produces benzene – a carcinogenic substance. There are even cases of withdrawing of some brands of drinks from the sale due to increased benzene content.
However, in general E211 is considered a safe additive, of course, with respect to current regulations at its maximum content in products.
Peter Piper has checked the effect of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells and found that this agent affects an important area of DNA in the mitochondria. He reported that these chemicals cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria and completely inactivate it.
Mitochondria give you energy and if you hurt them in large quantities, the cells start to malfunction. There are many diseases that are associated specifically with defect of this part of DNA: Parkinson’s disease and several neurodegenerative diseases; and yet it is associated with aging.
As a result of his experiments, the scientist proposes to revise standards of levels of E211 in food.
He believes that the existing methods for determining the damage from sodium benzoate are not quite true. Piper is particularly concerned of children who consume carbonated drinks in large quantities.

In spite of the fact that the FDA has banned the drink Four Loko, students still want it, which makes the manufacturer of it very happy. Some students have had to find medical help as a result of the over consumption of this drink that combines alcohol and caffeine. Recently, some University students had to be taken to the hospital after they blacked out at party. It is becoming apparent that regular consumption of this drink could lead to alcohol addiction. This, in turn, will eventually require North Carolina alcoholism detoxification for regular Four Loko drinkers who live in the Tar Heel state.
At a recent music concert almost 30 people were treated an illness that was determined to be related to alcohol and 11 people were taken to the hospital. The drink Four Loko has also been involved of deadly automobile accidents. As a result of a study that was conducted and these incidents, the FDA sent warning letters four of the companies that manufacture the mixed beverage.
The drink Four Loko is the equivalent of 8oz. of coffee and four beers. Some health officials believe that the drink is dangerous since the caffeine hides the level of intoxication, which makes it hard for the consumers to determine their limit accurately. There have been some scientific studies that have even determined hat caffeine is a food additive that is unsafe.
Despite what the experts say, the makers of Four Loko disagree. Phusion Projects say that the drink Four Loko is no more concerning than consuming Red Bull and Vodka. They still believe the combination of caffeine and alcohol is safe. Further, popular drinks such as Irish coffees and rum and colas that have been consumed responsibly and safely or years should be facing the same scrutiny that the drink Four Loko have faced recently.
The FDA website recently reported that of the combined use of alcohol and caffeine among college student in the United States, the use was as much as 26%. Most college students don’t see a problem with the energy drink. Although the statement by Four Loko CEO might be considered by some to be a valid argument, others believe they see the social influences combined with the science of their product as a larger possible risk than any other mixed drink.

4 – 6 Tea bags (at least 2 are black)
4 litres ( 140 fl oz) Pure water, rain or spring
300 grams (10 oz) White Sugar
1 Kombucha tea fungus
400 ml (1 3/4 cup//14 fl oz) Kombucha tea (mother tea), from your last brew or obtained with the mushroom / fungus – If you don’t have enough mother liquid
Boil the water in a stainless steel pot, add sugar, turn off heat and stir sugar until dissolved. Add teabags and let soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove tea bags and allow to cool. Strain (not necessary) and pour into fermenting jar. Add the fungus and mother tea to the jar. Cover and leave for one week in a place free from contaminants such as mould, cooking fats etc.
Recipes for Kombucha Tea with Pawpaw (Papaya)
100 grams (3.5 oz) Paw paw leaves and flowers
4 litres (140 fl oz) Pure water, rain or spring
300 grams (10 oz) White sugar
2 Green tea bags
4 Black tea bags
1 Kombucha tea mushroom
400 ml (1 3/4cup / 14 fl oz) Kombucha tea (mother tea), from your last brew or obtained with the fungus. If you don’t have enough mother liquid
Cut, clean and chop the stalks off the papaya leaves and flowers. Place in pot, bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer and cook for 1/2 hour. Let cool, strain and bring to the boil again, add sugar, turn off heat and stir sugar until dissolved. Add teabags and let soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove tea bags and allow to cool. Strain (not necessary) and pour into fermenting jar. Add the fungus and mother tea to the jar. Cover and leave for one week in a place free from contaminants such as mould, cooking fats etc.
The following quantities are for one litre.
5 tablespoons = 1/3 cup
3-5 tablespoons of white sugar.
1 – 2 teaspoons black tea (organic).
1 – 2 teaspoons green tea (organic).
1 teaspoon elderflower tea (optional).
1 tablespoon papaya leaf tea (optional).
1 litre water (Grander water).
100 mls of Kombucha tea, (as an acidic starter).
1 piece of Kombucha plant. (about 4 inches in diameter.)
Add the sugar to a glass bowl, dangle the tea bags over the side, then pour on boiling water. Use the tea bags to stir the liquid and dissolve the sugar. Leave the tea bags to steep until the tea has cooled. If you are using loose tea then steep the tea in a teapot, then mix with the sugar and boiled water in a bowl. Some herbs such as papaya leaf will need simmering in boiling water for 2 hours. Strain the herbs through muslin cloth.
When the tea has cooled to below 25C, mix in the Kombucha tea, then float the Kombucha plant on the surface. Cover the bowl with a tea towel held in place with an elastic band and leave it where it won’t be disturbed for 2 – 4 weeks at 20-25C. The longer you ferment the kombucha the less sweet and the more acidic it will become. The Kombucha tea is ready when a new mushroom has covered the surface and all of the sugar has been digested. When the kombucha is ready, scoop the tea out the bowl with a small jug and transfer to bottles. Discard the sediment. Refrigerate the kombucha before drinking. Store unused kombucha mushrooms covered with kombucha tea in a jar in the refrigerator.
Honey Kombucha Recipe
1. Two cups of starter tea
2. 3 quarts of water
3. 1 cup of Liquid Honey
4. 1/2 cup of sugar
Boil water for 5 to 10 minutes and remove from heat. Using a cooking thermometer monitor the temperature. When the temperature has fallen below 150 degrees F. add the cup of honey (or 1.5 cups to speed fermentation) and stir until the honey is dissolved. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Once the tea reaches room temperature you can pour off the mixture (leaving the sediment on the bottom behind).
Kombucha Banana Strawberry Smoothie Recipe
10 ounces orange juice
4 ounces Kombucha tea.
One piece of fresh Kombucha colony (sized to palate)
5-6 large fresh strawberries
1-2 large banana
Blend all ingredients at high speed in your blender until smooth.

In the US, a drink made of lemon juice, sugar and water in the UK, a carbonated drink that doesn’t necessarily contain anything closer to a lemon than a bit of citric acid.
A mojito is traditionally made of five ingredients: rum, sugar (traditionally sugar cane juice), lime, carbonated water and mint. To make non-alcoholic mojito (nojito) you need:
1 packet sugar substitute
6 fluid ounces lime-flavored sparkling water
Crush a sprig of mint in the bottom of a cocktail glass. Squeeze the juice of one fresh lime into the glass. Add 1 package of sugar substitute, crushed ice, and 6 ounces of lime-flavored sparkling water. Garnish with mint and serve.
Or you can try this variation of nojito (mojito) recipe:
8 mint leaf
3 ounces lime juice
1 1/2 ounces sugar syrup
2 ounces club soda
garnish with mint
Fill a pint glass 1/3 full with ice, then add mint leaves. Add the lime juice and sugar syrup. Lightly mash the leaves together with the liquid using a muddle stick or wooden pestle, careful not to tear the leaves. Fill the glass with more ice, then add club soda. Garnish with mint, serve, and enjoy!
Non-Alcoholic Mixed Drinks are often served to children, designated drivers and anyone else who wishes to enjoy a refreshing, (usually) fruity, drink without alcohol.

1 liter Milk

1/2 cup Sugar

2 Large Bananas
2 Handfuls Red, Seedless Grapes
1 cup Ice
Ice is essential for all types of mixed drinks, and it should always be clean and clear. Usually you would add ice to a glass before pouring any ingredients into it. This cools the liquids and prevents splashes.
1/4 cup Milk
Place the bananas and grapes into a blender and mix until it is a “smooth” liquid. Add the ice and blend until crushed. Add milk, mix until smooth and pour into a hurricane glass. Serve.
4. Black Cow Mixed Drink Recipe
2 scoops Vanilla Ice Cream
10 oz Root Beer (A non-alcoholic, carbonated drink, sweetened and flavored with a combination of artificial and natural flavorings).
1 tbsp Chocolate Syrup (A sweet combination of unsweetened cocoa powder, corn syrup and sugar, amongst other flavorings).
1 1/2 oz Whipped Cream (A type of cream containing sugar and emulsifiers. Whipped cream expands on release from pressurized cans).
Maraschino Cherries (A sugar syrup coated cherry, dyed red and flavored with almond).
Pour root beer over ice cream and chocolate syrup in a large tumbler glass. Garnish with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Serve with a straw and a long spoon.
5. Cherry Spritzer Mixed Drink Recipe
2 oz 100% Cherry Juice
4 oz Mineral Water
Mineral water is water is considered spring water with a larger amount of dissolved mineral salts, that is, at least 250 parts per million of dissolved salts.There is no unpleasant taste in mineral water, and a neutral odor. Although, despite claims to the contrary, there is no proof that mineral water is any better for your health than tap water.
Pour the cherry juice into the old-fashioned glass filled previously with 3 to 5 ice cubes and add the mineral water. Stir before you serve. You can mix the juice and the mineral water in the fifty-fifty percent relation too, but it is faster energy-delivering and even healthier this way.
Has anyone ever really looked into what actually goes into Energy Drinks? And the question is really though, do we care what we are putting into our bodies and what ingredients energy drinks actually hold.
A lot of people drink beer, alcohol, and do a lot of other harmful things to our bodies, so who is to say that we do care what energy drinks really do for our bodies. Anyone who is half way intelligent would look into what they are consuming and actually getting from the energy drinks.
Here are a list of the most common ingredients found in Energy Drinks.
1) Caffeine – It is probably the most common ingredient in energy drinks, as it acts as a big stimulant for people, which as well know is in the pop products we buy such as Pepsi, mountain dew, and other things such as coffee, but the key is that the caffeine is much higher quantity in energy drinks. From what I have looked at, most energy drinks contain around 100-200 mg of caffeine in them. This is why a lot of people feel the side effects of energy drinks is because the loaded amount of caffeine in energy drinks such as redbull, monster, and rockstar. This is something that most of us if we thought about it wouldn’t recommend for our everyday energy drink and source.
2) Taurine – I first learned about this in my previous company as it was the active ingredient in the product that was called OHM for energy drinks. Taurine is something that is naturally produced by the body, as it is supposed to help energy levels throughout the body. And usually your body makes enough of this so that you dont need to add extra to your body. And one of the things that they always talked about with taurine in energy drinks is that it could possibly help with stress levels as well. Again, something that isnt always the best for us on a day to day basis.
3) Guarana – It is derived from South America in plants and is supposed to be used for awareness and energy levels. It can be compared to caffeine but has a few different variations and stimulants.
4) B Vitamins – Well finally a word that seems to be good, vitamins. We all know the importance of vitamins and minerals because its what is supposed to be healthy for us. B Vitamins are supposed to wake up our bodies and kickstart them, and thats why energy drinks put these type of vitamins in them.
5) Ginseng – With the emergence of this supplement, its supposed to be a herb that is known to increase energy levels, and alleviate stress as well. Ginseng is created naturally by the body as well, but again the levels of supplementation and energy drinks dont match up well when you drink energy drinks on a regular basis.
6) Ginkgo Biloba – Along with ginseng, this is another emerging herb. It is supposed to help your memory, concentration, and blood circulation. This also is made for the regulating of stress levels.
7) L-Carnitine – Is naturally produced by your body and is supposed to help with your metabolism and energy levels. It is created by your liver and kidneys, but because it speeds up your metabolism it can often increase energy levels and thats the main reason why energy drinks hold this ingredient. It is supposed to give you endurance as well. The bad thing about this is that some people use this ingredient for support of their heart, so to much of this can speed up the heart and thats why you shouldnt take energy drinks to often.
8) Sugars – We all know about sugars. They are the bodys main fuel as we always hear dont go eating to much junk food as they are full of sugars. And thats why you get very hyper or active when consuming alot of sugars and energy drinks are loaded with them.
9) Antioxidants – These are actually a very good thing for your body, killing the free radicals in your body and recovering from the damage they can sometimes leave. Most vitamins contain some kind of antioxidants, but their are alot better ways of getting antioxidants than what energy drinks give you in the form of.

While many different categories make up the American beverage product picture, carbonated soft drinks (CSDs) paint the broadest strokes. As the “granddaddy of them all,” carbonated soft drinks (CSD)s occupy a unique place in the hearts, minds and palates of the American consumer.
Still and carbonated soft drinks will also contain trace elements of minerals from their main ingredient, water, and other ingredients e.g. juices. Some are also fortified with vitamins, details of which will appear on the label.
History of Carbonated Soft Drinks

Drinking water is extremely important, especially on hot days. However, even on cold days, you lose fluids while breathing cold air, so fluids are still important. For that reason, make sure to drink before, during and after your activity. Drinking water is perhaps the easiest way to minimize unnecessary joint and muscle pain, and can reduce fatigue. The Amount of Water We Drink per Day
The amount of water we drink depends on what on what we do each day.
If we are at work, and we are at the office all day then we’ll drink between 1 to 2 litres of water between 8.30am and 5.00pm
If we are having a factory trial or we are at the factory playing with machinery, then it’s anything between 2-4 litres because its always very hot down there.
If we go out for drinks with friends/work colleagues, then we match a glass of water/soft drink for every glass/shot of alcohol we have, or at least we try to remember to do it.
If we are out doing sports, we’ll consume an extra 2 litres of our sports drink (just gatorate powder in water) before we’ve finished a training session for out-rigging/dragon boat or football, or just 1 litre of water if it’s just the gym.
We don’t really aim to drink a specified amount of water per day. We just drink what we need for our body to feel comfortable.
Level of Water for Adults
For healthy sedentary adults living in temperate climates:
Men: 125 oz (3.7 liters) of water per day from all dietary sources Women: 91 oz (2.7 liters) of water per day from all dietary sources
For most people, this amount of water per day is a lot more than they normally drink. The requirement for men is roughly 1 gallon per day. How many of you men out there drink this much water every single day? For the women, 91 ounces is roughly 3 quarts.
However, an exercising athlete can lose enormous quantities of body water through perspiration. The recommendations listed above don’t apply to endurance athletes.
How Much You Need to Drink Water
The optimum amount of water you should drink depends on your body weight. The fatter you are, the more you need to drink.
Take one-half of the amount of your weight in pounds and convert that to ounces and that is how many ounces you should be drinking. Thus, if you weigh 128 pounds, you should be drinking 64 ounces a day. If you weigh 300 pounds, you need to drink 150 ounces a day. You can’t just categorize any liquid consumption as being adequate to meet the recommended amount– for example, coffee is a diuretic and causes you to lose water, so you wouldn’t want to try meeting your daily water requirements with large quantities of that.

We would begin with a definition:

Mountain Dew is an essential ingredient for successful computer programming. Mountain Dew is so popular with computer programmers and gamers or anyone else who doesn’t want to sleep.
The Code Red worm was named for the fact that anti-virus software programmers drank Mountain Dew “Code Red” to stay awake while working on the software update that would protect against this threat.
However, some studies have linked drinking soft drinks with risk factors for heart disease, but this study suggests that diet soft drinks sweetened with artificial sweeteners are just as likely to be linked as high calorie drinks sweetened with sugar.

A recent study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry found that grape juice was among the highest in antioxidants among the juices tested, including pomegranate juice. Grape Juice Protect against Breast Cancer
Every three minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer . While factors like age and heredity contribute significantly to a woman’s likelihood of contracting this disease, lifestyle and nutrition choices may also play a role. One dietary choice that may help provide protection against breast cancer is a glass of 100 percent grape juice made from deep purple Concord grapes.
According to a new study, published in the current issue of the Journal of Medicinal Foods, natural compounds in Concord grape juice protected healthy human breast cells from DNA damage. Healthy human breast cells were exposed in a test tube to an environmental carcinogen, benzo(a)pyrene, that is able to initiate a chain of events leading to breast cancer. However, the introduction of Concord grape juice compounds blocked the connection of the carcinogen to the DNA of the healthy cells.
“The purple grape compounds demonstrated the capacity to inhibit DNA adduct formation as well as to increase the activity of enzymes that metabolize and detoxify carcinogens, and suppress potentially cancer-causing oxidative stress,” said Dr. Keith Singletary, nutrition professor and lead researcher at the University of Illinois. “These new data suggest that anthocyanins present in Concord grape juice, as well as some other fruits and juices, warrant further study for their breast cancer chemopreventive potential.”
This research is the latest to suggest that Concord grape juice may be of value in maintaining breast health by suppressing oxidative stress and inhibiting DNA damage to cells that can lead to the initiation of cancer, or in helping to slow the progression of breast cancer by slowing the multiplication of cancer cells. Diets high in natural antioxidants have been associated with a reduced risk of some types of cancers, and Welch’s 100% Grape Juice made from Concord grapes is particularly high in anthocyanins, potent natural antioxidants that give the juice its characteristic deep purple color.

The investigators studied twelve men and three women, average age 62 years, who had known coronary heart disease. They were asked to drink Welch’s 100% Concord Grapes for fourteen days – about 21 ounces or two-thirds of a quart a day. Studies were then made of the diameter of an artery in the arm and the ability of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL, so called bad cholesterol) to be oxidized, a step thought to be important for LDL to get into blood vessel walls and cause arteriosclerosis.
The results showed that, after the grape juice diet, the blood vessels showed a greater ability to dilate and the LDL was more resistant to oxidation, both reactions likely to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and heart attacks.

The Verdict: If you need an extra 250 calories, fine. If not, drink water after a workout.
Sweet Fruit Juices
Grape juice and cranberry “cocktail” are two popular beverages, which carry the same calories and sugar as a soft drink. When purchased in 475 mL bottles, there are 290 calories or more. In the case of grape juice, it’s naturally sweet; cranberry cocktail has sugar added to the same level as a soft drink. So although you may think you’re getting a better nutritional value, you may just as well go for a can of soda.
The Verdict: Split a bottle of grape or cranberry cocktail over a few days.
Let’s get right down to the numbers. A Pina Colada rings in at a hefty 260. Rum and eggnog has 330 calories and the trendy chocolatini comes in with a whopping 440 calories. The alcohol, sweet mixes and fat in the coconut mix, eggnog and cream liqueur, all provide extra calories. That’s one thing few of us really need at this time of year.
The Verdict: Enjoy alcohol in moderation and skip the high sugar and fat mixes.
Frozen Carbonated Beverages
Frozen ice mixed with soft drink concentrates make for high calorie drinks. Furthermore, these drinks contain no vitamins or minerals. The beverages have 50 to 100 calories per 100 mL. Since the smallest cup is 500 mL (16 fl oz), the calorie content starts at 250 to calories per drink
The Verdict: A sweet drink is better left as a childhood memory.
How to avoid calories in drinks
Have diet mixers in drinks.
Have light beer and lager.
Avoid sugary and rich creamy drinks.
If having wine have it with low calorie tonic water or diet lemonade this will dilute the alcohol and reduce the calories available.
Have fresh fruit juice as a mixer if available.
Alcohol will increase your appetite and this will also contribute to the calories consumed, to avoid this avoid the kebabs and the chips and cheese etc.
