Boil the water in a stainless steel pot, add sugar, turn off heat and stir sugar until dissolved. Add teabags and let soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove tea bags and allow to cool. Strain (not necessary) and pour into fermenting jar. Add the fungus and mother tea to the jar. Cover and leave for one week in a place free from contaminants such as mould, cooking fats etc.
Recipes for Kombucha Tea with Pawpaw (Papaya)
100 grams (3.5 oz) Paw paw leaves and flowers
4 litres (140 fl oz) Pure water, rain or spring
300 grams (10 oz) White sugar
2 Green tea bags
4 Black tea bags
1 Kombucha tea mushroom
400 ml (1 3/4cup / 14 fl oz) Kombucha tea (mother tea), from your last brew or obtained with the fungus. If you don’t have enough mother liquid
Cut, clean and chop the stalks off the papaya leaves and flowers. Place in pot, bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer and cook for 1/2 hour. Let cool, strain and bring to the boil again, add sugar, turn off heat and stir sugar until dissolved. Add teabags and let soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove tea bags and allow to cool. Strain (not necessary) and pour into fermenting jar. Add the fungus and mother tea to the jar. Cover and leave for one week in a place free from contaminants such as mould, cooking fats etc.
The following quantities are for one litre.
5 tablespoons = 1/3 cup
3-5 tablespoons of white sugar.
1 – 2 teaspoons black tea (organic).
1 – 2 teaspoons green tea (organic).
1 teaspoon elderflower tea (optional).
1 tablespoon papaya leaf tea (optional).
1 litre water (Grander water).
100 mls of Kombucha tea, (as an acidic starter).
1 piece of Kombucha plant. (about 4 inches in diameter.)
Add the sugar to a glass bowl, dangle the tea bags over the side, then pour on boiling water. Use the tea bags to stir the liquid and dissolve the sugar. Leave the tea bags to steep until the tea has cooled. If you are using loose tea then steep the tea in a teapot, then mix with the sugar and boiled water in a bowl. Some herbs such as papaya leaf will need simmering in boiling water for 2 hours. Strain the herbs through muslin cloth.
When the tea has cooled to below 25C, mix in the Kombucha tea, then float the Kombucha plant on the surface. Cover the bowl with a tea towel held in place with an elastic band and leave it where it won’t be disturbed for 2 – 4 weeks at 20-25C. The longer you ferment the kombucha the less sweet and the more acidic it will become. The Kombucha tea is ready when a new mushroom has covered the surface and all of the sugar has been digested. When the kombucha is ready, scoop the tea out the bowl with a small jug and transfer to bottles. Discard the sediment. Refrigerate the kombucha before drinking. Store unused kombucha mushrooms covered with kombucha tea in a jar in the refrigerator.
Honey Kombucha Recipe
1. Two cups of starter tea
2. 3 quarts of water
3. 1 cup of Liquid Honey
4. 1/2 cup of sugar
Boil water for 5 to 10 minutes and remove from heat. Using a cooking thermometer monitor the temperature. When the temperature has fallen below 150 degrees F. add the cup of honey (or 1.5 cups to speed fermentation) and stir until the honey is dissolved. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Once the tea reaches room temperature you can pour off the mixture (leaving the sediment on the bottom behind).

Healthy drinking – coffee drinks.
With the rise of the chain coffee houses has come the popularity of creamy coffee drinks that are chock full of sugar and calories You could easily get more than half of your daily calorie allowance from your coffee break. Fortunately, you don’t have to forgo your treat. There are many lower-calorie choices, such as a small café latte or cappuccino made with fat-free milk (about 120 calories). You could also try for healthy drinking a 12-ounce Chai tea with fat-free milk for about 170 calories. Choose from a selection of herbal teas or, of course, plain old zero-calorie black java. And instead of the muffins or cake, try a crunchy biscotti for around 120 calories.
Healthy drinking – 100 percent fruit juice.
100 percent fruit juice is just that — it is made solely from fruit with no sugar added. Healthy drinking of fruit juice has the added benefit of being full of the vitamins that are naturally found in fruit, such as vitamin C and folate. I would suggest limiting the total amount of juice for the day to 4 to 8 ounces.

Milk allergy and intolerance

Has anyone ever really looked into what actually goes into Energy Drinks? And the question is really though, do we care what we are putting into our bodies and what ingredients energy drinks actually hold.
A lot of people drink beer, alcohol, and do a lot of other harmful things to our bodies, so who is to say that we do care what energy drinks really do for our bodies. Anyone who is half way intelligent would look into what they are consuming and actually getting from the energy drinks.

1) Caffeine – It is probably the most common ingredient in energy drinks, as it acts as a big stimulant for people, which as well know is in the pop products we buy such as Pepsi, mountain dew, and other things such as coffee, but the key is that the caffeine is much higher quantity in energy drinks. From what I have looked at, most energy drinks contain around 100-200 mg of caffeine in them. This is why a lot of people feel the side effects of energy drinks is because the loaded amount of caffeine in energy drinks such as redbull, monster, and rockstar. This is something that most of us if we thought about it wouldn’t recommend for our everyday energy drink and source.
2) Taurine – I first learned about this in my previous company as it was the active ingredient in the product that was called OHM for energy drinks. Taurine is something that is naturally produced by the body, as it is supposed to help energy levels throughout the body. And usually your body makes enough of this so that you dont need to add extra to your body. And one of the things that they always talked about with taurine in energy drinks is that it could possibly help with stress levels as well. Again, something that isnt always the best for us on a day to day basis.
3) Guarana – It is derived from South America in plants and is supposed to be used for awareness and energy levels. It can be compared to caffeine but has a few different variations and stimulants.
4) B Vitamins – Well finally a word that seems to be good, vitamins. We all know the importance of vitamins and minerals because its what is supposed to be healthy for us. B Vitamins are supposed to wake up our bodies and kickstart them, and thats why energy drinks put these type of vitamins in them.
5) Ginseng – With the emergence of this supplement, its supposed to be a herb that is known to increase energy levels, and alleviate stress as well. Ginseng is created naturally by the body as well, but again the levels of supplementation and energy drinks dont match up well when you drink energy drinks on a regular basis.
6) Ginkgo Biloba – Along with ginseng, this is another emerging herb. It is supposed to help your memory, concentration, and blood circulation. This also is made for the regulating of stress levels.
7) L-Carnitine – Is naturally produced by your body and is supposed to help with your metabolism and energy levels. It is created by your liver and kidneys, but because it speeds up your metabolism it can often increase energy levels and thats the main reason why energy drinks hold this ingredient. It is supposed to give you endurance as well. The bad thing about this is that some people use this ingredient for support of their heart, so to much of this can speed up the heart and thats why you shouldnt take energy drinks to often.
8) Sugars – We all know about sugars. They are the bodys main fuel as we always hear dont go eating to much junk food as they are full of sugars. And thats why you get very hyper or active when consuming alot of sugars and energy drinks are loaded with them.
9) Antioxidants – These are actually a very good thing for your body, killing the free radicals in your body and recovering from the damage they can sometimes leave. Most vitamins contain some kind of antioxidants, but their are alot better ways of getting antioxidants than what energy drinks give you in the form of.

History of Carbonated Soft Drinks
Soft drinks have been an anchor in American culture since the beginning of the twentieth century, but the roots of these beverages extend much further back in time.
The first carbonated soft drinks, which were named as such in order to clearly differentiate them from hard, alcoholic beverages, and the technology to make them were imported from the Europeans, who had discovered how to force carbon dioxide gas into water back in the sixteenth century.

Why are Carbonated Soft Drinks a Concern for Health?
Excessive use of carbonated beverages, sports drinks and fruit drinks can impact bone health, oral health and lead to obesity in young people. The typical 12-ounce can of non-diet pop provides approximately 150 calories, nine teaspoons of sugar, and no minerals or vitamins.

A new study on the risk factors associated with nighttime heartburn found drinking carbonated soft drinks and the use of benzodiazepines, a commonly-prescribed class of sleeping pill, are among the strongest predictors of that painful burning sensation.
School-age girls who drink a lot of carbonated soft drinks are increasing their risk of osteoporosis.
Carbonated Soft drinks and bones health
There has been a theory that the phosphoric acid contained in some soft drinks (colas) displaces calcium from the bones, lowering bone density of the skeleton and leading to conditions such as osteoporosis and very weak bones. However, calcium metabolism studies by leading calcium and bone expert Dr. Robert Heaney determined that the net effect of carbonated soft drinks, (including colas, which use phosphoric acid as the acidulant) on calcium retention was negligible. He concluded that it is likely that colas prominence in observational studies is due to their prominence in the marketplace, and that the real issue is that people who drink a lot of soft drinks also tend to have an overall diet that is low in calcium.
Reducing consumption of carbonated soft drinks, replacing benzodiazepines with other types of sleeping pills, and losing weight can all help reduce nighttime heartburn.
Grape juice is a fruit juice obtained from crushing grapes. The juice is often fermented and made into wine, brandy, or vinegar. In the wine industry grape juice which contains 7-23 percent of pulp, skins, stems and seeds, is often referred to as “must.” Grape juice can also be sweetened and preserved as a non-alcoholic drink beverage.
Commercial grape juice and grape juice drinks contain preservatives and coloring, and sometimes vitamins. Like wine, grape juice also contains antioxidants such as flavonoids, providing some health benefits. These antioxidants have been proven beneficial to the skin.Typically, purple grape juice is made from concord grapes.
Benefits of Grape Juice.
A recent study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry found that grape juice was among the highest in antioxidants among the juices tested, including pomegranate juice. Care should be taken when drawing conclusions from these results, since the pomegranate juice used was only a 30% pomegranate juice blend — 30% pomegranate juice diluted with sugar water and other lower-antioxidant juices.
French scientists claim grape juice can have the same protective effect as red wine. Dr. Valeriea Schini-Kerth is leading a study in Cardiovascular Research, states that grape juice shows the same effects as red wine, which is a very important discovery.
Researchers at Strasbourg Louis Pasteur University undertook experiments on the juice of red grapes with large seeds.
Red wine and certain types of grape juices have high levels of polyfenol which can stop the production of proteins causing cardiovascular illnesses.
Schini-Kerth states that not every grape juice has the same effect, but those containing polyfenol can be effective.
Grape Juice Protect against Breast Cancer
Every three minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer . While factors like age and heredity contribute significantly to a woman’s likelihood of contracting this disease, lifestyle and nutrition choices may also play a role. One dietary choice that may help provide protection against breast cancer is a glass of 100 percent grape juice made from deep purple Concord grapes.
According to a new study, published in the current issue of the Journal of Medicinal Foods, natural compounds in Concord grape juice protected healthy human breast cells from DNA damage. Healthy human breast cells were exposed in a test tube to an environmental carcinogen, benzo(a)pyrene, that is able to initiate a chain of events leading to breast cancer. However, the introduction of Concord grape juice compounds blocked the connection of the carcinogen to the DNA of the healthy cells.
“The purple grape compounds demonstrated the capacity to inhibit DNA adduct formation as well as to increase the activity of enzymes that metabolize and detoxify carcinogens, and suppress potentially cancer-causing oxidative stress,” said Dr. Keith Singletary, nutrition professor and lead researcher at the University of Illinois. “These new data suggest that anthocyanins present in Concord grape juice, as well as some other fruits and juices, warrant further study for their breast cancer chemopreventive potential.”
This research is the latest to suggest that Concord grape juice may be of value in maintaining breast health by suppressing oxidative stress and inhibiting DNA damage to cells that can lead to the initiation of cancer, or in helping to slow the progression of breast cancer by slowing the multiplication of cancer cells. Diets high in natural antioxidants have been associated with a reduced risk of some types of cancers, and Welch’s 100% Grape Juice made from Concord grapes is particularly high in anthocyanins, potent natural antioxidants that give the juice its characteristic deep purple color.
Benefits of Grape Juice for Heart
Drinking Concord grape juice can be good for the heart – much like red wine. And so, with the link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer causing concern for some women, drinking 100 percent grape juice made from Concord grapes can help your heart and perhaps your breast health.
Grapes, like nuts, seeds, some vegetables and fruits, contain flavonoids – interesting substances that are also found in red wine and act as antioxidants. The investigators studied twelve men and three women, average age 62 years, who had known coronary heart disease. They were asked to drink Welch’s 100% Concord Grapes for fourteen days – about 21 ounces or two-thirds of a quart a day. Studies were then made of the diameter of an artery in the arm and the ability of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL, so called bad cholesterol) to be oxidized, a step thought to be important for LDL to get into blood vessel walls and cause arteriosclerosis.
The results showed that, after the grape juice diet, the blood vessels showed a greater ability to dilate and the LDL was more resistant to oxidation, both reactions likely to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and heart attacks.
Grape juice can also lower the risk of developing the blood clots that lead to heart attacks, according to unpublished findings from Georgetown University researcher Jane Freedman, M.D. So can red wine, but in this case grape juice is the more practical way to go: “Wine only prevents blood from clotting (when it’s consumed) at levels high enough to declare someone legally drunk,” says University of Wisconsin researcher John Folts, Ph.D. “With grape juice, you can drink enough to get the benefit without worrying about becoming intoxicated.”
With a glass of purple grape juice with breakfast or for an afternoon snack, her heart can realize the same benefits as those of her wine-drinking friends. And if you don’t want wine at dinner, uncork one of the fine nonalcoholic reds on the market. They’re loaded with antioxidants as well as great flavor and you can drink all you like without worrying about driving home.
Black tea promotes healthy arteries and increased blood flow due to antioxidants called falconoids, which give tea its flavor. Cholesterol levels drop as tea consumption increases. Making a Cup of Black Tea
The single most important thing to remember in all of this process is heat. The tea leafs impart their taste to the water most effectively when the water is actually boiling. To make really good tea you must go to every length possible to exclude coldness from the equation.
Tea in the cup is easy. If someone asks you for a cup of black tea and you put a bag in a cup and add boiling water no one is going to complain. However… to make a REALLY GOOD cup of black tea…
Boil a kettle with freshly drawn COLD water. Add a little boiling water to the empty tea cup to warm it. Put a single bag of black tea into the bottom of the cup making certain that the tea takes up as much of the visible surface area as possible.
When the water is boiling pour it into the cup by taking the kettle to the cup and trying to make certain that as much boiling water hits as much tea as soon as possible. Leave to infuse. The tea in tea bags is so fine that two minutes should see you right.
Always take out the tea bag before giving the cup to someone else especially since if you leave a tea bag in then soon enough all the air caught within it will escape and the tea bag will sink to the bottom of the cup where it will lie in wait for the unwary and then, just as you move to drain the last dregs of the drink, it will rush from the darkness like a some satanic seal desperate to invade your mouth and propigate it’s evil children in the cavities of your cheeks. Well may be it’s not that bad, but it is really unpleasant to get that big cold wet kiss of a sulking tea bag.
Don’t add sugar. Sugar is unnecessary, unhealthy and masks the delicious flavor of tea. Most importantly when making a cup of black tea is NEVER “top up” a cup with more water. “Topping up” does not make more black tea in the cup it makes the same amount of tea diluted with more water. This will kill the taste of your tea and make you generally hated by all right minded tea drinkers. Be prepared when adding the water first – realize that you will have to take the tea bag out and realize that you will probably need to leave a little room for milk.

Iced Black Tea
Pour one cup of boiling water over two tea bags, let steep for 3 to 5 minutes. For stronger flavor, steep longer, or use more tea bags. Remove and squeeze out tea bags. Add ice and enjoy. Make a larger quantity using more tea bags and water, and refrigerate the rest to drink throughout the day.
Egg Nog Delight
6 Red Rose English Breakfast tea bags
1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 quart milk
1/2 pint whipping cream
Brew Red Rose tea bags in 1 cup boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes. Remove tea bags. Cool tea. Add beaten eggs, condensed milk, vanilla, salt, tea, milk and mix well. Serve in mugs. Top each mug with whipping cream and ground nutmeg.
Earl Grey Punch
1 and 1/4 cups of brewed Earl Grey (made with two tbsps. leaves)
Juice of 1 lemon
1 1/4 cups of orange juice
1/2 cups apple juice
1 cup gingerale
1 tbsp. sugar
2 sprigs of mint (optional)
Dark rum to taste (optional)
Mix all ingredients together leaving out the ice cubes. Chill in refrigerator. Remove mint, add ice cubes and serve.
Anyone exhausted from working or playing hard, or who feels in need of a pick-me-up, can boost their energy with sugarcane juice. It provides food energy at a level approximately twice that found in ordinary soft drinks.
Sugarcane juice will be popular with sportsmen and women who are looking to top up their levels of muscle glycogen. Sugarcane juice is a more effective way of replacing this carbohydrate energy than refined sugar-based soft drinks, particularly for endurance training/events. The benefit of sugarcane juice is in providing positive well being and health benefits.
A small study has found that tart cherry juice reduced muscle pain caused by intense exercise as well as strength loss in days immediately after the exercise.
Sports drinks don’t hydrate better than water, but you are more likely to drink larger volumes, which leads to better hydration. The typical sweet-tart taste combination doesn’t quench thirst, so you will keep drinking a sports drink long after water has lost its appeal. An attractive array of colors and flavors are available. You can get a carbohydrate boost from sports drinks, in addition to electrolytes which may be lost from perspiration, but these drinks tend to offer lower calories than juice or soft drinks.

If you get dehydrated it can stop you getting the most out of your activity, so it’s important to make sure you drink enough. To help keep you hydrated:
Don’t wait until you feel thirsty
Drink lots before you start exercising
Keep some drink to hand so you can reach it whenever you need it while you’re exercising
Drink plenty when you’ve finished
And remember that the fluid we have when we’re exercising should be on top of the usual 1.2 litres (6 to 8 glasses) we need every day to stop us getting dehydrated. If you’re exercising for longer than 1.5 hours, try to eat a high-energy snack such as a banana or some dried fruit before you start or during exercise (if this is practical).
If you can’t manage this, you might find it useful to have some diluted fruit juice or squash to help give you energy. It’s not usually necessary to drink sports drinks just because you’re active. Fruit juice mixed with water, well diluted fruit squashes, or juice drinks will hydrate you and give you some energy. But remember that these, like sports drinks, contain lots of sugar, which means they contain extra calories and can lead to tooth decay.
Warnings about juice for sportsmen
Fruit juice is in its own way a natural energy drink with sugars occurring naturally. However they are pretty concentrated in the natural juice and if you were going to drink the juice for sport activities you should probably dilute it.
While sport and juice flavored drinks may sound healthier, they are non-carbonated versions of soda, often with water and high fructose corn syrup as the first 2 ingredients. Even 100% juice drinks are often made with concentrates of pear, apple, and grape and in the end are really water and sugar.
Juice may be nutritious, but it isn’t the best choice for hydration. The fructose, or fruit sugar, reduces the rate of water absorption so cells don’t get hydrated very quickly. Juice is a food in its own right and it’s uncommon for a person to drink sufficient quantities to keep hydrated. Juice has carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes, but it isn’t a great thirst quencher.
You may be getting plenty of exercise, watching watch you eat and counting those calories carefully. But did you know that more than twenty percent of your daily calories could be coming from what you drink?
The calories in drinks do not stop with the sodas, and fruit drinks you take every day with your meals, but also with the alcoholic drinks you are consuming and with the flavored waters, you might be drinking as well. Look on the label and see what the calories are in each serving, and then look to see how many servings are in that bottle or glass you are pouring.
You will find that many bottles of soda are going to state a 20-ounce drink is one and a half or two servings, and the calories that are stated, are not how many is in the entire bottle. Read the labels, think about how many you drink every day and then if you are taking in more calories than what you should be, change the drinks you are having all the time. Pure fruit juices contain a high number of calories per serving but are often overlooked as a contributor to obesity because many contain valuable vitamins and minerals. But when it comes to obesity and weight control, isn’t a calorie a calorie?
The number of calories in drinks sweetened by added sugars compared to those in naturally sweetened drinks is almost identical. An 8-ounce serving of cola, on average, contains 93 calories and fruit punch has 104. The same serving of orange juice contains 102 calories, while apple juice has 107. All these drinks contain similar amounts of sugars.
The most high-calorie drinks
Let’s see how some of the most common drinks measure up on the calorie counter. The following beverages are being compared to water (0 calories); coffee and tea (5 calories per 250 mL); 1% milk (110 calories for 250 mL) and orange juice (60 calories in 125 mL).
Mochaccino or iced coffee drinks (300 mL or 10 oz) usually have over 250 calories. The syrup flavor alone has 80 calories and you may want to think twice about the whipped cream. If you absolutely must have your fancy coffee fix, make sure to get it with skim or 2% milk.
The Verdict: Coffee drinks deserve their reputation as an adult milkshake.
Juices sold in convenience stores typically come in 473 mL (16 fl oz) or 591 mL (21 fl oz) bottles. Believe it or not, the calories ring up quickly. A bottle of orange juice is 225 calories and the larger bottle of apple juice is just less than 300 calories. To put this in perspective, that’s more calories than a can of soda. When it comes to drinking juice, one glass to start the day is more than enough.
The Verdict: The sugar and calories in large juices rarely justify the “fruit” status.
Some sport drinks come in large “individual serving size” bottles. One brand has almost 800 mL with 250 calories. On the bright side, there is some sodium and some potassium, which may be helpful if you have worked up a sweat in humid weather. This drink also has about 60 ml (4 tbsp) of sugar.
The Verdict: If you need an extra 250 calories, fine. If not, drink water after a workout.
Sweet Fruit Juices
Grape juice and cranberry “cocktail” are two popular beverages, which carry the same calories and sugar as a soft drink. When purchased in 475 mL bottles, there are 290 calories or more. In the case of grape juice, it’s naturally sweet; cranberry cocktail has sugar added to the same level as a soft drink. So although you may think you’re getting a better nutritional value, you may just as well go for a can of soda.
The Verdict: Split a bottle of grape or cranberry cocktail over a few days.
Let’s get right down to the numbers. A Pina Colada rings in at a hefty 260. Rum and eggnog has 330 calories and the trendy chocolatini comes in with a whopping 440 calories. The alcohol, sweet mixes and fat in the coconut mix, eggnog and cream liqueur, all provide extra calories. That’s one thing few of us really need at this time of year.
The Verdict: Enjoy alcohol in moderation and skip the high sugar and fat mixes.
Frozen Carbonated Beverages
Frozen ice mixed with soft drink concentrates make for high calorie drinks. Furthermore, these drinks contain no vitamins or minerals. The beverages have 50 to 100 calories per 100 mL. Since the smallest cup is 500 mL (16 fl oz), the calorie content starts at 250 to calories per drink
The Verdict: A sweet drink is better left as a childhood memory.
How to avoid calories in drinks
Have diet mixers in drinks.
Have light beer and lager.
Avoid sugary and rich creamy drinks.
If having wine have it with low calorie tonic water or diet lemonade this will dilute the alcohol and reduce the calories available.
Have fresh fruit juice as a mixer if available.
Alcohol will increase your appetite and this will also contribute to the calories consumed, to avoid this avoid the kebabs and the chips and cheese etc.
The problem is usually not one high calorie drink, but rather the number of high calorie drinks consumed each week. Is it three, five, or maybe more? Think about you how you might enjoy an extra 750 calories per week. Choices could include three of these drinks, something more nutritious, or perhaps a completely different small indulgence. Whatever you decide, I’ve laid out the facts so you can drink to your health.

There are new regulations concerning food and drink sold and served within schools, but it’s reasonable to expect that “goodness” in children’s drinks is a subject which will soon spread to other areas of out-of-home catering, even if only as a promotional angle.There is a problem, however – the rules are still not clear, and some people say they are plain wrong.
The School Food Trust has laid down stringent rules for drinks sold in schools for consumption by pupils – apart from water, the only other drinks permitted in school will be milk, pure fruit juices, and yogurt and milk drinks. Drinks made from a combination of these will be allowed, together with low-calorie hot chocolate, tea and coffee. Fizzy and sugary drinks are out.
On the face of it, it’s all well-meaning advice – but even Parliament has now questioned its accuracy. In June, Dr Ashok Kumar, MP for Middlesbrough and East Cleveland, told the House of Commons that, in their enthusiasm to do the right thing, the authorities had missed some aspects of general health.
It has been shown that children’s ability to do arithmetic is impaired even if they are only slightly dehydrated, he said – and as 40% of teenage schoolchildren don’t drink the necessary 1.2 litres a day, hydration is a big issue in school. And yet, the School Food Trust guidelines have approved smoothies, because of their fruit content, although they are not good for hydration. On the other hand, low-calorie soft drinks, which can be helpful for hydration, are prohibited for being “fizzy”.
“The ban should be based on the properties of the drinks,” says Kumar. “Smoothies are reasonably calorific and expensive, and are not always a realistic option for hydration allowing low-calorie drinks alongside smoothies would be a better overall approach.”
Several fruit juice companies have said that the MP has done well in illustrating that the rules are well-meaning but wrong. “We’ve followed this closely, and we agree with Dr Kumar,” says Matt Crane, the ‘pure hydration director’ of Juice Doctor, the brand which claims to have invented the category of so-called functional hydration.
This is a concept part-founded by Olympic rowing champion Sir Steve Redgrave, and it holds that not just schoolchildren but three-quarters of the entire UK population are in a state of perpetual dehydration, which is the number-one cause of headaches and daytime fatigue.
As most people dislike drinking plain water, says Juice Doctor, the best remedy is a flavoured beverage which provides hydration, minerals and vitamins. Juice Doctor’s “hydration fix” drinks are based on fruits such as blackcurrant, pomegranate and lemon, with minerals which encourage water to be held in the body for longer.
However, they fail the school guidelines on sugar. “In a very simplistic way, the trust has sought to say that kids should drink water or fruit or dairy,” says Crane. “Smoothies are OK, although we now hear talk of certain smoothie drinks having the same amount of sugar as a Mars bar. By contrast, we’re a juice which uses a very small amount of beet sugar, so we’re ruled out.”
Support for Juice Doctor’s position comes from Frobishers, the fruit juice company which handles a vast amount of supermarket own-brand juicing. There is illogicality in the ruling, says commercial director Ray Tyrrell. “We see that some smoothies are now made from concentrated fruit juices packed with additives and e-numbers – so the rule cannot concentrate on the type of drink,” he says. “It should concentrate on the properties of the drink.”
Among the big names, Britvic has joined the hydration side of the argument with two product moves. One is the launch of The Really Wild Drinks Co, a range of six natural juice drinks available only through vending and over-the-counter sales in schools, and designed to offer more “street-cred” than plain water. “We invested to create an appealing product that secondary school students would want to drink,” says Britvic sales director Andrew Richards. “Our research showed that teenagers thought Really Wild was cool.”
Britvic has also redesigned its Drench bottled water on the same theme, claiming “a new marketing concept – mental hydration”. The pack talks of staying “mentally and physically hydrated all day”, and a future marketing line will be: “Your brain is 75% water – keep it topped up.”
Variety of drinks
The British Soft Drinks Association has also spoken out on the same lines as Kumar. “We would like fluid intake targets to be included in the standards, as children risk the side effects of dehydration,” said its response to the School Food Trust. “Providing children with a variety of drinks to choose from is important.”
Variety is the point which really has been missed, says Richard Canterbury, managing director of Love Smoothies. “The majority of smoothies contain natural fructose, not artificial sweeteners, and give children vital nutrients and vitamins in an easy-to-drink format,” he says. “One of Love Smoothies’ beverages provides 2.5 of the five-a-day [fruit servings] that a child requires, which is something water and cheap carbonate drinks can’t do. So smoothies should be consumed in addition to water, not instead of it, thus giving children both the nutrients and the hydration.”
He adds: “Because smoothies are made from pure fruit, they’re more expensive than we’d like them to be, but we are looking at ways to make them more affordable. And we continue to supply state schools.”
The confusion over sugars and additives in children’s drinks has been most robustly raised by the Big J, the first company to propose a legal definition of a smoothie.
“As there is no definition, cheap impostors have infiltrated the market, charged pure smoothie prices and confused the consumer,” declares managing director Josephine Beach. “A smoothie should adopt the same guidelines as 100% ‘pure’ juice – anything that is added to dilute or artificially enhance is not pure, and should be labelled a ‘smoothie drink’. Today’s consumer knows the difference.”
The Big J has said that it doesn’t need to change any of its products in response to the School Food Trust guidelines, but has launched an aggressive campaign against additives, measuring the contents of several competitor juice drinks and rating them with a skull-and-crossbones mark.
Simplistic rulings are not enough, says the trade, and an example comes from Paul Bendit of Metro Drinks, whose Juice Patrol product has been approved by the Hyperactive Children’s Support Group. Research has shown that 87% of children diagnosed as hyperactive had adverse reactions to artificial colourings, and 72% were sensitive to artificial preservatives. A psychiatrist reports having obtained consistently positive results in treating hyperactive children by removing artificial additives from their diet.
This, says the soft drinks trade, shows just how much there is to think about when laying down the rules.
